In the summer of 2025, I ran a series of workshops and demonstrations celebrating ancient crafts associated with the lakeside over the centuries. These events, hosted by some of the area's most knowledgeable and skilled artists and makers, were specifically held for the members of Ballaghaderreen Men's Shed, among whom there were numerous individuals who offered their own skills and insights to the events. The workshops initiated an important dialogue about the continuing relevance of these skills as well as the need to preserve them for future generations.

PROCESSING & SCULPTING WILD CLAY

White marl clay makes up the lake-bed of Lough Gara and had many uses in prehistory and indeed into the historic period. This abundant source of clay would have undoubtedly been used for building structures, mould-making, the construction of furnaces, and ceramics.

This workshop, which took place over two days in May, was hosted by local artist Nollaig Molloy. Firstly a quantity of clay was dug, then Nollaig took the group through the various stages of processing the clay into something that could be worked- removing sediment, plant material, and excess moisture. The second part of the workshop took place a few weeks later, having allowed sufficient time for the clay to dry out somewhat. In this, participants made vessels of various sizes which were then fired in a kiln.

BRONZE SWORD CASTING

This demonstration took place at Clooncunny Bridge on the shore of Lough Gara on a sunny Saturday in May. Hosted by myself, the event took place over two hours in which I demonstrated making a sand mould, and then heating up and pouring molten bronze into it. The result was a replica of an actual late bronze age sword found at the lake dating to c. 700 BC. The sword was even quenched in the waters of the lake when it was removed from the mould! There is plenty of evidence for metalworking having taken place on some of Lough Gara's crannogs in the late bronze age, including sword mould fragments and bronze slag. This is possibly the first time a sword has been cast on its shores in 3,000 years!

BLACKSMITHING

Local blacksmith, Patrick Strahan of 9 Irons craft dropped by for this workshop event where various smithing techniques were demonstrated and attendees got a chance to try their hand at the hammer and anvil themselves. Patrick expertly crafted various iron objects including fire pokers, bottle openers, and more in keeping with this project, some replica medieval penannular brooches.
